Did you know that in 2010 an estimated 54% of US dogs and cats were either overweight or obese? That's a huge number! I know what most of you are thinking: "So what? My pet has a few extra pounds. They're fluffy and lovable." But stop and think about this- a 12lb yorkie is the equivalent to a 218lb woman. A 90lb lab is the same as a 186 pound 5’ 4” female. A 14lb cat is the same as a 237lb man (all figures from petobesityprevention.com).
When an animal gets that large they run the risk of developing diabetes, painfull arthritis, a variety of cancers and diseases, highblood pressure, and worst of all, a life expectancy decrease of up to 2 1/2 years.
